Residence Permit: Requirements and Application Process
Nordic Citizens (Norway, Sweden, and Finland)
Nordic citizens can reside, study, and work in Denmark without additional documentation. However, it is advisable to carry a valid form of identification (such as a passport, driver's license, or bank card) and register at the citizen service center to obtain a personal identification number.
EU Citizens and EEA/Swiss Nationals
EU citizens and EEA/Swiss nationals can also reside freely in Denmark under the EU rules of free movement for up to three months without any permit or documentation, apart from their national identification card/passport. If you plan to stay longer than three months, you must apply for a registration certificate.
To obtain the registration certificate, you need to apply at one of the Regional State Administrations in Denmark within three months of your entry. This certificate enables you to obtain a personal identification number and a health insurance card. Bring the registration certificate along with your passport/national identification card to the citizen service center.
It is advised to register at the Regional State Administration even for short stays (less than 3 months). Visit the provided website for detailed information on applying for a registration certificate.
Countries Outside the EU
If you are from a country outside the EU/EEA, you must obtain a residence permit before entering Denmark to attend a folk high school. Apply for the residence permit at the Danish embassy or consulate in your home country once you have been accepted by the folk high school and completed all administrative requirements, including paying the school fee and administrative fees. (Please see www.nyidanmark.dk for information on the current administrative fee for the residence permit)
